A new generation of wave board is capturing the heart, soul, and imagination of coast-based surfsailors. ![]() ![]()
Designed exclusively to take advantage of surfsailing the clean wave faces that can be had in light air, before higher wind speeds turn them into a choppy mess, these responsive boards are becoming the secret weapon in the arsenal of many surfsailors.
Before the advent of these wider, higher volume, earlier planing boards these surfer/sailors spent countless hours wishing and hoping that the wind would either pick up so they could at least "bob and shlog" around catching waves on their "old generation" wave boards or die so they could go surfing.
Length: 8'7", Nose: 11", Tail: 14 1/2", Width: 22 3/4", Weight: 14 lbs, Volume: 88 ltrs, Price: reg. $1395, on sale $1295
Mark Bassett is at the "cutting edge" of design and construction in this new genre of sailboard. Mark, originally a San Diego based surfer/shaper spent several years on the Oregon Coast perfecting his forward loops, back loops, tacks, and other flashy moves that has caused many seasoned observers to ask
"who da guy?". Mark moved his family to Corpus Christi, Texas in 1991 (warmest, windiest spot in the country and closer proximity to aerospace materials) where he developed his racing skills, which eventually resulted in him becoming the 1992 U.S.W.A. Men's Champ. His race results on his custom boards helped him develop a loyal and hungry clientele for his race boards.
However it is Corpus Christi's close
proximity to the big waves of Mainland Mexico that really fueled his surfing desire and helped him refine his surfboard templates. He builds and rides strapped surfboards that enable him to minimize board length by optimizing energy transfer from body to board for "down the line" drive and radical aerial maneuvers.
