The Santa Barbara Outrigger Canoe Club hosted the 27th Annual State Sprint Championships on Saturday...and followed it up today with the 5th Annual Fog Chaser Race...newly added standup paddle division...turned out to be a 6 miler, instead of 5, because somebody's GPS unit was off...;-)

Conditions were quite challenging with lots of sideways bumps and a head wind...the nasty current wasn't showing anyone any love...but, nothing like the 32 mile Molokai to Oahu race today...20+ kt winds and 7' seas were predicted...incredibly, early reports are that Jamie Mitchell wins for a 7th time at 4:57:14...20 minutes ahead of 2nd place...and Duane Desoto won the standup division at 6:47:06...

Rich Schroeder showed that his world class Olympic competitive swimming skills transferred well to standup paddling by taking 1st place on my 14' custom Sean Ordonez...



A smart tactical move at the start kept Brian Fernandez at bay on his new 14'8"
Starboard ...



The wifey won the women's division on a stock 12' Hobie...

Big shout out to everyone that helped make many new standuppers today in Santa Barbara...our staff and a number of friends helped to facilitate a standup demo/clinic for SB's Momentum 4 Life group...several people pointed out that today set new records for numbers of standuppers on the water at one time in Santa Barbara...and, for how many new standup paddlers were baptized...including a 82 year old guy with two knee replacements...

Miles of smiles...on another perfect day in paradise...

We baptized these new additions to our extensive standup paddle board quiver today...
Several of the old guard SB standuppers took them for a spin today and were impressed with the performance and appearance/features...

Heck, we just had a client from Alberta, Canada drive down with his family, and picked up a couple of Starboard Fishies from us...Brad was sporting a really kewl new Airstream "Basecamp" full of toyz...he promised us some piccies from his home waters once he returns home...

Thought you might like to see little Spencer in action. Now he asks me to bring "his" standup paddleboard to the beach when we go. He's hooked. He mostly uses one of my dad's super old surfboards.



A little background on Spencer Rocket Caserio...
On September 2, 2003, at 2 years, 10 months old, Spencer was diagnosed with T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (T-ALL). This is a somewhat rare and aggressive form of childhood leukemia.

"As of July 1, 2008 Spencer was given a completely clean bill of health. No issues whatsoever. In any tests that gave instant feedback he is normal to above normal in all of them. Don't know what else to say besides Spencer is a rock star. Keep it up. We could not be happier."
